Dr Markus Trochsler
(MD, MMIS, FMH, FRACS)

Dr Markus Trochsler leads the Upper Gastrointestinal and Hepatobiliary Unit at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Adelaide and is a senior consultant at the Royal Adelaide Hospital.

Born and educated in Switzerland, he gained specialist recognition in General Surgery in both Switzerland (FMH) and Australia (FRACS) before completing advanced subspecialty training in Upper Gastrointestinal and Hepatobiliary surgery in Adelaide. He also holds a Master in Minimally Invasive Surgery (MMIS) from the University of Adelaide.

A Senior Lecturer in Surgery at the University of Adelaide, Dr Trochsler is actively involved in research and the teaching of undergraduate and postgraduate students. He has authored numerous book chapters and published over 95 peer-reviewed research publications. Through his research, he contributes to multidisciplinary projects in cancer and clinical science, helping advance surgical practice and patient care.

In 2020, Dr Trochsler performed the first Pressurised Intraperitoneal Aerosol Chemotherapy (PIPAC) procedure for gastric cancer in Australia at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Adelaide. He has particular expertise in the use of PIPAC for the treatment of peritoneal spread of upper gastrointestinal cancers, with a focus on improving quality of life, managing ascites, and slowing disease progression.

Dr Trochsler is currently leading a world-first clinical research trial investigating the use of neoadjuvant PIPAC in advanced gastric cancer as part of a potentially curative treatment strategy. He is also involved in the development of novel bidirectional treatment protocols combining PIPAC with systemic chemotherapy and immunotherapy for stage IV gastric cancer.
