Associate Professor Ryash Vather
(BHB, MBChB, FRACS, CSSANZ, PhD)
Ryash Vather is a Consultant Colorectal and Exenteration Surgeon with specialist training in advanced surgical oncology. He is a staff specialist at the Royal Adelaide Hospital and consults privately at St Andrew's Medical Centre, Windsor Gardens and St Andrew's Hospital.
Ryash grew up in New Zealand completing his undergraduate medical training at the University of Auckland. He then went on to specialise in general surgery, qualifying as a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (FRACS) in 2018. He undertook two further years of accredited colorectal specialisation in Australia under the auspices of the Colorectal Surgical Society of Australia & New Zealand (CSSANZ). This was followed by travel to London (funded by RACS scholarship) to undertake the prestigious six-month Complex Cancer and Advanced Pelvic Exenteration fellowship at St Mark’s Hospital.
Upon returning to Adelaide in 2022, Ryash has performed several operations for the first time in South Australia including Extended Lateral Sidewall Excision, High Sacrectomy, and Common/External Iliac Resection. These procedures have been met with excellent oncologic and functional outcomes, and mean that bowel cancer patients requiring this curative surgery no longer need to travel interstate to receive care. Ryash sits as chair of the Colorectal Cancer Multidisciplinary Team Meeting at the Royal Adelaide Hospital.
Ryash completed a PhD in 2015 investigating gut recovery after surgery. He has authored over 60 peer-reviewed articles in surgical journals including the paper “Defining Postoperative Ileus” which has been cited over 350 times. Ryash's current academic interests relate to 'precision oncology' whereby colorectal cancer treatment is tailored to each patient to optimise outcome. He is clinical lead for the Gastrointestinal Cancer stream at SAHMRI and serves as Adjunct Associate Professor at UniSA's Centre for Cancer Biology.
Outside of work Ryash enjoys spending time with his young family. He is an avid musician, and enjoys recreational free-diving and touch rugby. Ryash has also undertaken volunteer work in Nepal and the Pacific Islands.
